  1. Insignia electronics are very inexpensive and poorly performing units. I would look for a brand name unit instead.

  2. MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumer Reports' latest DTV converter tests singles out a handful of manufacturers and models as getting top marks in overall performance and value. Tivax Digital TV Converter STB-T9 was on the top of this list. The review says, "This box was among the best for picture quality, with images that come close to those of a DVD." The review also mentions that the Tivax box, "has an informative program guide, a few nice convenience features, and comes with A/V cables (composite-video and stereo audio) in addition to the usual RF cables."

The entire review can be found at: http://blogs.consumerreports.org/electro...

On February 17, 2009, all major TV stations are required by the government to turn off their existing analog broadcasts and switched into digital broadcast. According to the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) report, about 15.5 million US households watch TV over the air programming.

The US Congress created the TV Converter Box Coupon Program for people wishing to keep using their analog TV sets after the analog-to-digital cutover date, February 17, 2009. The Program allows U.S. households to obtain up to two coupons, each worth $40, which can be applied toward the cost of eligible converter boxes

  3. Go for insignia.

    Tom Masters

  4. The Insignia converter is one of the best on the market, I've bought two of them. Make sure you get the newer model that has analog pass through.

Insignia is just a Best Buy brand name, they don't actually manufacture the stuff.

The Insignia converter is actually made by LG electronics and except for the name, is identical to Zenith DTT 901. If you have a Kmart near you, you might see if they have the Zenith in stock; they were selling it for $10 less than the Best Buy price.

Two other models to consider are the RCA DAT 800B1 that Walmart carries in some parts of the country at about $50. It's remote control is the most elderly friendly.

The Channel Master model is liked by a lot of people who are willing to pay a bit extra to get s-video output.
