I was wondering which extra food is best at putting on weight/keeping on weight. I'm buying a 17.2hh TB and his weight's good at the moment but I know he'll need extra food. He gets, in a big bucket, 1 scoop pellets, 1 scoop oats, 1 scoop pollard and the rest of the bucket filled with chaff (at a guess the bucket could be like a 7L bucket, hmmm... not really sure...), twice a day.

My instructor said that Ezi-Result is best. My other instructor said that Ezi-Result has a lot of sugar in it (could make him a little hot, though I doubt it, he's really calm lol) and said that Fatten Up is best. Or I'm just thinking of getting him put on hay every week (1 flake of lucerne hay in the morning with feed and 1 in the afternoon with feed).

I'm mainly looking for stuff I can buy in Australia and not too expensive.

Hay is an extra $30 a week, while a bag of Ezi is $33 and my friend says it last about a month.

  1. I guessing teeth are good and no worms, and also I don't think MORE food is needed, try adding 1 cup corn oil to his feed once daily, mix in slow over 2 wks.  And free choice hay or at least 2-3 flakes 3 times daily.  Best of luck.

  2. When I've had trouble with horses keeping on weight in the past, I put them on Equine Senior feed. Worked for me.

  3. I've had luck with senior horse feeds, beet pulp (soaked of course) and adding corn oil to their feed. With the oil, you can add as much as they will eat, it helps to make them shine and is supposedly good for their digestive system as well. 'Course this is in Canada, not Oz. Good luck to you with the new horse!
