  1. You can also try feeding your horse a garlic supplement - the scent released through the horse's body is supposed to repel flies and insects. Don't overdo it though.

We used to use citronella which works well, but this has now been banned in the UK as an ingredient. I now use the Naf Off fly repellant in the pink container. This seems quite effective. Its in the mid price range.

  2. the stuff with sunscreen is a major waste of money, dont bother, try watering it down alittle, it works just as well and lasts a little longer

  3. I like EQyss marigold spray because it is all-natural (no chemicals!) but it still works really well. I'm too lazy to just make my own =)

    Marigold Fly Repellant:

  4. I make my own and through experience, it has worked better than shop ones. Baby oil as a base, citronella for flies, lemongrass for wasps/bees, tea tree cider vinegar and garlic powder. It does the trick and is very inexpensive.

  5. Piranha (sp?) it comes in a yellow spray can or bottle. And cost anywhere from $8.00 and up depending on the size of the bottle. I have used it for years and have had good success with it.

If you horse in is a paddock pick up and remove all of the manure weekly atleast. This will help cut down on the flys. In a barn be sure to clean all manure and urine spots out of their bedding daily. You may want to strip the sall (remove all bedding and stall mats down to the ground) and lightly sprinkle some lime over the base of the stall and let it set for a few hours before putting in fresh shavings. This will help dry the base of the stall out and remove the urine smell from it. In the barn you may also want to hang some fly strips or catchers where the horses can't get to them.

Fly sheets also work good if you horse has problems with them on his body. You can usally order one for under $50. I don't really care for fly mask. Some horses will try to rub them off and cause the material to get pushed against their eye. It can cause alot of irritation if this happens.

  6. The best I have found so far is CDS Permectrin.  It is a pour on that lasts two weeks.  It is about $20 for a bottle but the bottle lasts all 7 of my horses the entire summer.

As far as a spray on I like Zonk It.  It works as well as any and is quite a bit cheaper than most.  You can save money by buying a concentrate pyrethrin though and it will work as well.  Just mix per directions and you will be fine.

  7. I use vinegar and water equal parts

  8. I use pirahna fly spray.  It works really well, and although it is expensive, if you are turning out your horse at night, marigold spray (it smells really good!) Keeps the mosquitoes away.  You can use them together.

  9. Flysect Super-C Concentrate is INCREDIBLE. Long lasting, smells good, and you mix it 4-to-1 so it's dirt cheap. (at least 1/4 what the ready mixes cost).

Do not bother with Ultrashield EX which "lasts 14 days." I think they meant 14 hours. And the super cheap stuff-- Manna Pro -- is completely worthless. I sprayed it directly ON a fly and it just shook its wings like it was refreshing.

  10. Try Global Herbs, FlyFree . . Its an in feed supplement which works really well. all natural herbs. you will see a difference in 2 days max. My boy is on it and he s the only one in the field that doesnt get bothered by flies, no tail swishing nothing. the herbs produce a smell that comes out through their coat. it also makes their coat very healthy and shiny.

  11. You can make your own, that is cheaper than most store bought and works great on sensitive skin horses.  Use equal parts Avon skin-so-soft, apple cider vinegar and water.  Put in a spray bottle.

  12. i use brute for my horses. Works very well and is about $20-30 for a 600ml bottle, but it does wonders on my horse :)

  13. make yr own, crush a couple of heads of garlic and boil up in water....strain and decant into a spray bottle, flies hate the smell of garlic..its ...garlicy...lol...but it works :)

  14. http://www.equine-world.co.uk/horses_car... thats a good site for making your own but i usaully use "Naff Off" which is only £9.99 for 750ml
