I want to go on an extended backpacking trip next year (several months) and would like get a pair of glasses so that I can fully appreciate the sights I will see. I had to get my first pair a few years ago (bought the first ones I tried on) then lost them a year later and never had them replaced, so I'm not very cluey on the latest features and technology of glasses nowadays. I was thinking of a frameless pair so that my vision is unobstructed, but are there any suggestions (brands or features) for something that is durable and light, suitable for backpacking travel?

  1. Whatever frames you get, get these lenses:

I finally got new specs a few months ago (after six years on my old ones), and got the polycarbonate lenses. Half the thickness of my old lenses, and tougher. Weigh next to nothing. I don't know if I'd go frameless with these, though, since they are so thin. Worth the extra cost!

  2. Get the transition ones so you don't need sunglasses and regular glasses. Buy the insurance in case you lose or damage them. Some stores will let you change the glasses in a certain period of time if you don't like them for a full credit. Lenscrafters is where I got mine.
