for a small tank. a 10 gallon tank. This is my first tank, so I have 2 have a goldie that isn't gonna die on me in the first 2 days! I had 4 fantail goldies when I was little and they died in 2days from getting them. But they were in a pond outside and there was alot of stuff that went wrong with that pond. I love the commen golies, but are they a good choice seeing as they swim fast, won't they swim into the side of the tank?!

  1. well ten gallons isnt really alot of room for any goldfish...id say get ONE fantail goldfish...but i really suggestt you get a 20 gallon and get two fantails...they are the hardiest of the fancy goldfish

  2. well, 10 gaalons is to small for even 1 full grown goldie. I know they start small, but even the smallest goldie will get 6 inches or larger as an adult. common goldfish need a 50 gallon tank for 2 and fancy goldfish need 20 gallons for the first goldfish and another 10 for every fancy goldfish you add after that. Also, did you have a good filtration system?? Goldfish are one of..if not THE messiest fish in this hobby. Here is a really good site on goldfish care- http://www.kokosgoldfish.com/care.html

Oh yea and it is a myth that fish only grow to the size of its tank. If a gldfish is kept in a small tank its growth will be stunted and its internal organs will contiue to grow untill they either rupture and die or their organs stop working and they die. So if a goldfish is kept in anything smaller than a 20 gallon then your gonna hae a dead goldfish withing 2 years when a well cared for goldfish can live 10+ years.

Good luck, oh yea and feeder fish are commons and get a foot long, so don't get one of those expecting it ot stay small, cuz it won't.

  3. 2 common golds would do great in a 10 gallon tank, and dont worry about them swimming into the side of the tank, they wont get hurt from that

  4. Commons are too big for a 10 gallon. You could have two small fancy goldfish in a 10 gallon but you'd have to get a bigger tank once they grow. 20 or 30 gallon.

I have two fancy's in a 20 gallon. And I'm hoping that I'll be able to get a bigger one soon.

Cycle the tank. Buy a good filter. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/pr... And every two days take 1 gallon of water out of the tank and replace it with a dechlorinated gallon of water.

  5. Common goldfish will definitely outgrow the tank.  Even a fancy goldfish need 20 gallons.  I suggest you don't get goldfish, stick to a tropical tank.

  6. Dont go with common's.  They get big and big fast.  We have one that has gone from barely an inch long to about 5 inches long in less than a year in our 65 gallon.  They're really better suited to living in ponds like koi.

You can start out with 2 small fancies like black moors, fan tails, or orandas but you will need to eventually upgrade the tank as they get bigger to something closer in the 30 gallon range for them to truly be happy and live a full life of 20+ years.

Or you can just try a nice tropical setup with some platies, mollies, and swordtails in the 10 gallon.

  7. I would advise you not to get any type of gold fish for a 10 gallon tank especially not common ones as they are pond fish but even fancy ones would out grow a ten gallon tank.Tropical community fish would be a better option for your tank, there are many to choose from and the only extra equipment you need is a heater.

  8. OK, 2 fancy goldies need a 40 gallon tank. therwise their bodys wont grow o their full potenial, but their organs will, resulting in a horrible painfull death for the poor thing =[  for commons, its the smae deal, except they require 5 gallons EACH! please, do NOT get goldies for such a small ttnka, thatd b cruel!

  9. i suggest you don't get goldfish, because they are very messy fish, and you will need to clean the tank way too often. i suggest a male betta, with some danios or tetras for company. i suggest danios because they are very hardy and will not die easily. Bettas because they are hardy and very pretty, and tetras because they are nice to look at and swim around fast. don't worry about them swimming into the walls of your tank, they will learn where  the walls are pretty quick.

Good luck, with whatever fish you choose!

  10. Before you get your fish and when you are setting up your tank, please read this article about cycling your tank:

Do not purchase your fish from Walmart.  Most stores now no longer sell  fish.  If you are going to go with comets go with the smaller v-tails.  they only get around 5 inches while comets grow in excess of 18 inches where common goldfish grow in excess of 24 inches.

I would recomend a hana fusa or white pompom oranda.  This is a beautiful fish and it has a dorsal fin.  They are not fast fish however.  You really should stick with the smaller variety like the pearlscale's or fancy's since most won't grow over 7-8 inches max.  Although goldfish do not need hundreds of gallons of water to live happy healthy lives, a 10 is too small for the larger faster varieties.

  11. check with your pet store and ask for the proper care for the gouldies. for a 10 gallon,.you will probably need 2-4 of goldies. Just follow instructions on proper care...and you'll be fine.
