When you're staying in Barcelona, location is key. Hotel Regencia Colon is a fifteen-second walk from the cathedral, a six-minute walk from Las Ramblas, a ten-minute walk from Placa Catalunya and a fifteen-minute walk from the sea. It is clean and quiet, with English-speaking staff. It is equipped with an elevator and our second-floor room had everything we needed, including two English news stations on TV. The hotel also has a restaurant-bar that serves an optional breakfast, although we didn't feel it was a good value. Hotel Regencia Colon is a smaller offshoot of the Hotel Colon, which means you receive the same great service as its more expensive partner at a lower price.

I would recommend the Hotel Medici in Barcelona which is only about 2 blocks from the Sagrada Familia.

The rooms were a bit small.  I stayed in a single room which had enough room for a bed a table for the TV.  But it was clean and had its own bathroom and closets.

The other downside: it's near the hospitals.  So if you're a light sleeper, the sirens might keep you up at night.  I had a room facing the street and slept through it all.

You can't beat the location and the price, though. For my stay last November, I paid about 48 euros per night.

It's walking distance to Sagrada Familia.  You can take a quick taxi to Parc Guell. And the Metro isn't too far away.  There's also a nice cafe, Cafe Gaudi, the next street over which serves excellent Spanish chocolate and croissants.

I also stayed at Hotel Barcelona which was about 3 times the price.  It was located on the Passeig de Gracia near the Gaudi houses.  While the rooms were definitely larger and the location was more convenient, it was more overpriced and the location was very touristy.

It depends on your budget.

My favorite hotel is Hotel Banys Orientals. About 95€

My favorite apartments are Freestanza. About 75€
