Question:

Best hummus?

I've only tried one, but it was so boring and unappetizing I've never tried another.

However, tons of people adore it, so I'm guessing I got a bad brand.

Any recommendations? I love garlic, if that helps. And hate onion.

  1. Try a more flavoured variety rather than the plain.  There's a roasted vegetable, lemon and coriander, ones with pesto on the top, these are much more appetising than the plain.

    When I use the plain, I put it with avocado, crispy lettuce, tomatoes and either mango chutney or sweet chilli sauce in a wrap/pitta bread.

  2. my favorite is personally Athenos brand roasted red pepper.. but I"m sure they also have a "garlic lover's" if you want to try it..

    Yes, hummus is great stuff.. don't give up on it.. Try some diff brands.. diff flavors.. you may just be surprised..

  3. Try to buy your hummus regionally so that it is fresh and does not contain artificial preservatives. I really like Whole Foods Market hummus. Minimal ingredients and thick, the way I like it. My advice is not to buy hummus with the oil added, drizzle olive oil on the top, which is the traditionally the way it is made.

    Or as stated above make it yourself....

  4. I like Cedar's. They have a Garlic Lovers flavor too.

  5. No store bought stuff will ever be as good as what you can whip up in a food processor in five minutes!

        *  2 cups canned garbanzo beans, drained

        * 1/3 cup tahini

        * 1/4 cup lemon juice

        * 1 teaspoon salt

        * 2 cloves garlic, halved

        * 1 tablespoon olive oil

        * 1 pinch paprika

        * 1 teaspoon minced fresh parsley

    Process until smooth.

  6. Trader Joe's grocery stores make a d**n good garlic hummus, but they're not in every state. Every other store bought hummus consistency is too firm in comparison.

  7. Take 2 cups of chickpeas, 2 TBS of olive oil, 1 TBS of tahini, one or two cloves of garlic (smashed) and 1/2 tsp sea salt, 2 TBS umeboshi paste (optional but yummy) 2 TBS of lemon juice and puree in a food processor. This will be a dry style of dip, perfect for spreading on a sandwich. Try adding a red pepper to it if you want to give it a little more flavor. There are really good runny styles out there too. Experiment and enjoy.

  8. I eat Athenos hummus - the roasted garlic flavor.

    It's delicious! It can go on sandwiches, bagels, chips, pitas, sliced veggies....the list goes on!

  9. Don't go store bought unless it is made IN the store that you are buying it from......it is soooo much better fresh!  Whole Foods makes a good one and also any natural food store should have some.  Then try some baba ganoush (pureed eggplant)! :)

  10. the tribe of 2 sheiks brand is really good..  so is the brand they sell at costco..  they usually have a plain variety and a red pepper and jalepeno..  both are great..  stop and shop makes their own brand now too. the original is good but the garlic one was way too garlicky..

    the best hummus is the one you make at home though..  below is my method but you could add more garlic if that appeals to you..  ratios are for 1 16 oz can of chick peas

    chick peas (1 can)

    1 clove crushed garlic

    healthy drizzle of olive oil

    tahini (at least 2 spoonfuls, but it is really "to taste")

    squirt of lemon or lime juice

    combine all and blend away until creamy!!  if it doesn't get creamy you might need a little more oil.  be sure to add salt in at some point while eating it though..  for example, I often eat it with tortilla chips or pita chips but if I eat it with toasted pita or cucumber or tomato slices I will top it with some salt..

  11. sabra

  12. Sabra! They have all different flavors- including garlic.  My favorite is Supremely Spicy.
