  1. Sophie must have been lucky. Be warned, I have had bad experiences - bad tempered waiters, and one time when I found a hair in my food, they refused to do anything about it.

I recommend the one called Standard Balti House, however.

Food is good and includes the usual curry house fare, cooked well, plus one or two apparently more authentic Bangladeshi dishes, which makes a nice change.

They don't try to tempt you in with free booze, but let you bring your own instead, which is even better.

And the staff are friendly (although it probably helps if you are in one of these places as a family or couple, rather than a lively group of young folk, in which case I think they expect you to be annoying even if you're models of civility).

Whichever place you go, please can you report back and let us know how you did?

  2. The best is just around the corner from Brick Lane - New Tayyabs. It is very popular, so book ahead or be prepared to queue!

  4. I've eaten at several and never been disappointed, I looked into this once but I think the answer is they're all really high standard. If in doubt, go to the one with the most reviews in the window! Personally I like the ones Time Out recommends.

  5. would have to eat in all of them to find out! lol i went there the other day and it smelt so good
