Insurance companies differ widely from state to state, and it depends on the person.  They all have different formulas to determine your premium using your location, motor vehicle record, auto loss history, insurance credit score, drivers in your household, age, insurance history, and more.

People say that Erie and USAA are the cheapest.  Some say Progressive or Esurance.  Others say Geico.  I've gotten rates from all of them, and none of the one's I just mentioned are competitive at all.  I was previously insured with Allstate, I got in one accident, and my rate doubled and then some.

The best rates I've received (by far) are from Nationwide and State Farm, and I've gotten rates from everybody.  Every other quote is more than double what I'm currently paying with Nationwide, and what I can pay with State Farm.

Keep in mind that that means nothing, because it differs substantially from person to person.
