  1. In order to best answer your question , I would need some additional details , but I will throw out a couple of suggestions . For a family vacation with kids , your best option would be an all inclusive resort ( unlimited meals , snacks & beverages ,etc. ) that will allow you to stay under your budget and get the most out of your trip . Many of the all inclusives have " kids stay , play , eat & drink free " promotions for families with kids under 12 or 13 years old ( usually the cut-off age for those promotions ) and then offer discounted rates for older children under 17 . The destinations with the biggest variety of these type of resorts would be Cancun , Jamaica , the Dominican Republic or the Bahamas and each has plenty to offer . I would be happy to help you find the perfect destination & package for YOUR family , if you'd like ; just email me ( gerry@snapshottravelagency.com ) with some details - departure airport , dates to travel , approximate budget , number of travelers & ages , preferences , likes & dislikes , etc. ) and I will find you the perfect vacation package for YOU . I have vacationed in each destination ( I'm partial to Jamaica ,myself , but it might not be right for you ) so I can add personal experience to my expertise in order to help you . Good luck & best regards , Gerry Donnelly , Snapshot Travel

  2. I think the Atlantis in the Bahamas is the best island resort in the Caribbean for active kids.

Beaches Resorts in Jamaica ot Turks and Caicos is another favorite for familt vacations.

If that doesn't do it for you, here is a link with other family vaction spots.

    Good Luck and enjoy)

  3. Try Tobago. It is the most unspoilt Island in the Caribbean and it is outside the hurricane belt.Snorkeling, diving, rain forest walks, horse riding etc and on The Caribbean side some of the best beaches in the Caribbean chain

  4. Cuba is by far a beautiful island and amazing for families and children of all ages. Active kids would have a blast on the beach and with all the water activities and other things to do. Amazing sight-seeing and wonderful people.

Barbardos is also a beautiful place and so much fun.

  5. Sorry Stella, I hated staying at Atlantis. Everything is so fake and "Las Vegas". There are so many naturally beautiful places in the Caribbean. Ok, a visit to go on the slides (if the children are the right height) but it's over-priced too.

Stay somewhere in Nassau and take a day trip to Paradise Island.

Otherwise; Harbour Island, Barbados or Bermuda.

  6. I recommend the Cayman Islands.  The water is so clear, so it has some of the best diving in the world.  Seven Mile Beach is gorgeous, and you don’t have people approaching you everywhere either panhandling or trying to sell you something like you do on so many Caribbean Islands.

  7. Well I would have to say Antigua 365 beaches, lots to do, carnival, Stanford 20/20, sailing week! Wow! Its awesome.

  8. North Coast of the Dominican Republic - Puerto Plata. There you will find every day some different possibilities for your active kids, and not to expensive!

  9. I am still in the process of conducting extensive research on just this subject. I still have about a hundred more islands to go. Seriously, I loved:

    Grand Cayman

    Antiqua

    Cozumel

    St. John and

    Eluethera (Bahamas)

  10. Dominican Republic obviously! Cheap and very nice...

  11. How old are the kids? Some people say "active kids" and mean that the kids need lots of organized activities or they will get bored and whine. Others may say "active kids" and mean that the kids need lots  of room to run and horse around where they won't bother adults : )

I have a toddler who falls somewhere in between. He is certainly not happy just sitting quietly on a blanket while I read novels on my chaise (those were the days!) but he doesn't need jet skis and bingo and limbo contests, either!

So far we have enjoyed more than a dozen Caribbean islands, as a family and as a couple. One thing to consider when picking the best for your family is how easy it is to get there... I would love to take my little guy to the Grenadines, but to get there requires at least 3 flights, a ferry, and about 24-hours in travel time (and that is from a major East Coast city!). Also, depending on their age, I worry about quality of health care on the island and ease of getting off in an emergency... Dominica may be lovely, but it does not offer a great hospital. Jost van d**e is beautiful  but there is no air strip and no way to get to a doctor after dark.

So, if you are not looking for a big all inclusive (which I assume you are not, because if you are, you wouldn't be asking "which island" because they are almost all on jamaica and the DR) and you want a balance of easy transport, safety, and activities, I would recommend:

Puerto Rico for its rainforest, culture/history, and beaches. I liked El Conquistador for a family. Lots to do on site and not far from El Yunque.

St. John for its gorgeous nature and beaches. We looked into staying at the Westin which has a kid's program (but they don't take kids until they are out of diapers) or one of the eco-camps.

Grand Cayman also strikes a nice balance for families.... Snorkeling is great and there are kid camps at the Hyatt and the new Ritz (both start at age 3-4, as I recall). We stayed at the Westin, which is also nice though not as large as the other two I mentioned. There are also lots of condo options on Grand Cayman.

We also loved having him with us on St. Martin and Anguilla but there is not much to do for "active kids" unless you choose a big Dutch side resort or pony-up for Mallihouana on Anguilla which has a big waterpark.

Let us all know what you decide!
