It depends on what you are using it for. I agree with the other that Basmati rice is rich however I prefer jasmine rice because it doesn't over power foods such as some lighter curries.  Even though its very widely used I think that Japanese Nishiki rice is the best for making fried rice that everyone is mentioning here. I lived in Japan and my Japanese girlfriend would always use cold rice (leftover) nishiki for her fried rice...it does taste better for some reason. I also like a strange Popcorn Rice that actually smells and taste like popcorn.  For my pound for pound most versatile and tasty rice I like to buy Jasmin rice from Thailand.

Genuine Basmati rice (as in, from the foothills of the Himalayas) and a good brand for it is Tilda.  Even brown basmati rice is great...not so hard and rubbery like other rices.

There's an American "Basmati" rice also but it has none of the aroma.

Ambemohar rice is very special too, but difficult to find.

My favourite method is steamed rice.  Let the rice soak in salted water the whole day, and steam it.  Measure the water 1 cup rice to 1 1/2 cups water with salt and let it soak in it, then steam it in it. It will absorb all the water.

(for other cooking methods you need to adjust the water level.

I use jasmine rice, its aromatic, comes in brown and white and is dee-licious.  I usually make a lot and the next day I use the cold rice for stirfry
