I homeschool. We want to teach our 1st grader German next year, but neither myself nor my husband speak it. What is the best program to use in a scenario like this?

  1. PowerGlide is good; SOS also has a CDRom-based program that's extremely similar.  I've used the PG, now using the SOS Spanish, I honestly prefer the SOS.  It's even the same lessons, just presented in a bit different way.  (I'm not sure if they have the German out yet or not.)

For early elementary...you may also like "The Learnables".

    Here's some other programs:

For 1st grade, keep it simple; it will be heavy on vocabulary, some culture, and that's really it.  It shouldn't get into grammar till about 4th-5th grade.  However, it will give your child a good foundation for the specifics that he/she will learn later.

    Hope that helps!

  2. I really like Power-Glide and it's online now, not just offline.

We're doing the middle school Spanish I.  They have a 30-day return policy if you want to try it out.

  3. You can look into:

    Rosetta Stone

    The Learnables

    Power Glide

    Berlitz

You can find reviews of different programs at:

There are also some free language programs in the list of resources on these pages that include audio for those who aren't native speakers:
