Best linux OS for high school?

Question

Im already using ubuntu but the problem is the teachers give us our textbooks on cd's and they only work with windows..and i refuse to use windoes first because i cant afford aying 600 somthing dollars for somthing that doesnt work anyway..I use winedoors but alot of stuff doesnt work with it yet..anyone know of a non-eye candy linux Os that'll work good for me in school?

there's certain things you just gotta use windows for

wine is so inefficient that it's easier on the machine to just install a virtual copy of windows and run that on top of linux
