My family wants to get a tank for display in the house. It will probably be 55 gallons and definately freshwater. What would you say is the BEST set up for maximum beauty. Any fish that will look nice together and of course, get along.

THANKS

  1. The prettiest looking tank in my opinion would be a bowed front. There are many nice 55 gallon bowed front tanks with stand combinations. Buy an actual aquarium stand as they are designed to disperse the weight of the tank evenly. Trying to use some cabinet you have laying around is not a good idea. As far as what to put in it, pick out the nicest looking decorations, gravel/rocks, and plants (real or fake) from your local PetSmart, PetCo, etc. For fish to stock it with, I would recommend something like this:

1 Pleco. Any kind is fine, just pick out the one you like the best.

1 or possibly 2 clown loaches.

    4-5 rainbow sharks/redtail sharks.

Also, look at brightly colored fish like mollies and tetras. Schooling fish would be best.

Before buying these fish, know that you have to cycle the tank. If you don't know what that means, or how to do it, use this as a guide: http://www.firsttankguide.net/cycle.php

  2. Definitely a bow front....They give an amazing panoramic effect......as far as the deco......that is completely up to you....look up pics of set up tanks on line to get good ideas.......For the fish,

1 Pleco.......remember that a new tank has a lack of algae for him to eat so algae wafers would be helpful...

Giant Danios are a nice schooling fish that are highly active to draw attention to the tank.......

Angels are usually fairly nice to watch but also not very hardy and pretty laid back........

Mollies, guppies, and Platys are always a nice choice as well coming in all sorts of amazing colors and also quite active.....Not to mention that with sufficient cover for the babys youll never be short of fish in your tank......

Bala sharks, Redfin sharks, and iridescent sharks are all good choices as well....

Have fun!!!! Its all up to your creativity......good luck...

  3. probably guppies. I have alot of them, and they breed easily.

  4. I agree with John Z about the tank. There are many different shapes and styles that can be chosen from. There are also many different fish to choose from. I personally am fond of Clown Loaches ( must be quarantined separately due to being more prone to ich due to not having scales, they have skin that is very sensitive to stress, and water quality, I have 2 in quarantine still, about a month of quarantine is enough), Corydora Cats come in many different spices, I have 4 Albino Cories and 2 Pandas, very good bottom dwellers that clean the gravel, I also have Blood Cichlids,Jellybeans( finding out that they are very Territorial) Tiger Barbs( can be notorious at fin nipping) Black skirt Tetras, and 2 Kuhli Loaches, I have 3 more in quarantine, they are just like the clown loches. Kuhli and Clown loaches do best in schools. Clown loaches will reach almost 12' but they grow at a very slow rate. All of my fish reside in a 55 gallon rectangular tank. Hope this helps you and your family in choosing buddies!
