Question:

Best low maintenance flowers/plants for garden?

Hello,

i've never had a garden before, so am completley inexperienced. What plants and flowers would people recommend to plant? I don't have a great deal of money to spend, and would prefer something that will be sort of capable of looking after itself. I live in the UK.

  1. Shrubs are low maintenance and they are literally hundreds from which to chose. However, you can compliment them by also planting heathers and by planting perennials which come up every year.

Don't be too quick to plant but do plan what and where you are going to plant. I'm sure the website the first poster has given you will provide you with all the answers.

However, I would look at various plants that give you all year round colour. For every season there is a flower or shrub. Pots can look stunning too with the right plants.

  2. Hmmm if you can get them, marigolds and dusty millers are cheap and fuss-free :)

  3. I started my garden a couple of years ago . So I wanted fast results .I planted a few white potato vines to start with some height .,passion flower vines and morning glory .They grow pretty fast and they don't really need a green thumb .(i don't have one ). Then I planted some azaleas ,also very easy to care for ,and bushes like like the purity Japanese pieris . I bought most of them at Wal mart (it's the most affordable) and also at Home depot .Make sure you water regularly and keep snails out of your garden ,they can do real damage just overnight . Good luck!

  4. As you're on a budget I'll suggest perennial herbs, some of which will also come into the shrub category.

On top of smell and colour they are edible.

Not being tied to just flowers, if you have a shady spot, plant rhubarb and you are getting something back with minimal effort.

  5. tulips and dafodils will come up in spring to give you some colour.

bamboo is hardy if you want some screening you can buy them small to grow up. my husband went to to park and dug up a cutting for free! (just a small bit).

I tend to plant only what i can eat eg: cherry tree, bamboo you can actually eat the new shoots!

next door have a "strawberry tree"/shrub. its everygreen and slow growing, easy to look after and you can eat the fruit it produces but wait until they are deep orange/red colour.

lavender is nice and attracts the bees.

  6. Hi, have a read at these articles on low maintenance gardens.

    Shrubs are a great idea.
