What is the best marathon training program to follow for an experienced runner? I followed Hal Higdon's program for a prior race. Is this the best one, or does anyone know of a better program?

  1. I'm aware of a pretty good number ending up with Pfitzinger (former Olympian, and author of "Advanced Marathoning") after they've accumulated some experience.

You'll often see the plans referred to as things like Pfitz 18/55, or Pfitz 18/70 when people talk about them.

  2. Hal Higdon's program is a good one. Most training programs tend to be the same, but if you alter the speed and intensity it can help make a difference.

After awhile your body will become used to your pace/tempo. To get a stronger workout, try to incorporate more hills and integrate some harder speed work. Be mindful of intensity so that you dont injure yourself.

Have you tried incorporating light weights training. You could help build a stronger core. Yoga also helps with strecthing and posture.

I keep a runner's blog if you are interested - see below.

  3. I'm currently using Daniel's Running Formula in conjunction with a heart monitor. I like the program a lot. It has kept me free of injury and the two hard workout's a week are very demanding. We will see if it pays off in San Antonio.

  4. Here's a great article for first time marathoners to read; it links to training schedules, and other articles and videos that will give you inspiration and talk about the many different possible approaches to the marathon.
