  1. Muay Thai.

  2. Jujitsu has the best self defense classes around u can also if your very fit go for brazilian jujitsu both are the best form of self defense anyone can learn

  3. Chito Ryu hands down. Its Karate at its least watered down, and totally focused on defending urself no matter how big, small, young or old u are. There are only a handfull of certified instructors in the us tho.

  4. Move like water and you'll be fine!

  5. More important the which art is which school you attend.  Many styles work for self defense but will only work as well as they are taught.  Make sure to have someone help you to find a great school with quality instruction that has experience.  The wrong school will get you more hurt than protected and also will cause you to lose faith in Martial Arts not just your instructor.

On another note, I know it is very hard but try not to let bullies get in your head, I am not saying to let yourself get pushed around but try to avoid having to deal with idiots.  They will bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

I hope you find a good academy, I would try an MMA academy as the intesity of the classes help you to progress faster, the downside is you miss out on a lot of what makes traditional martial arts more than just a form of self defense but also the lessons of respect and what self defense truly means, instead you become more of a fighter.  Just my opinion though.

  6. Tae Kwon Doe

  7. There is no superior martial arts.  Just a superior man who makes his system the best by doing what it takes to perfect the basics.

  8. Combat Hapkido u will never look back it is so lethal some dojo do not allow sparring

  9. All the other answerers is going to get you killed or beaten up badly with those styles that they're recommending. They're not being logical and realistic, but rather sarcastic. They're only 2 styles in martial arts that only work on the streets and in hardcore fighting events: Brazilian Ju-jitsu and Freestlye Wrestling. Since the reality is: that 95% of fights ends up being in a clinch or grap and then on the ground--and none of those styles wouldn't be effective in that situation; this is where Brazilian Ju-jitsu and Freestyle Wrestling comes into play--with Brazilian Ju-jitsu being the better of the style because of its numerous submission holds and solid ground work.

  10. At your age, Tae Kwon Do.

  11. On the street a stand up art is necessary for  obvious reasons. I have gone on and on about this for a long time.

The next is also quite obvious as well to anyone who has trained for a significant time. No one art is a perfect fit for any one individual. So you need to compromise on the following principals.

If you are smaller than average you will have to rely on redirecting opponents energy of attack more than an average build individual. Some arts are versatile enough to provide this like Wing Chun Kung Fu. If you are average to large than a more direct art like Taekwando is versatile enough, although even a smaller frame individual will find good self defenses in Taekwndo, but not until higher ranks. You can next consider what is available to you perhaps Hapkido or Kenpo is all that is available. Both are good arts and can be useful if taught realistically, and that is where the next principle is important. Whatever the art if you do not train realistically and train as if your life may depend on it it won't serve you when it is time to face the elephant.

SO more important than the art is how you train. Cross training in another art is very important as well, but only after you master and unravel your primary art. I know it sounds old fashioned. The reason it got to be old fashioned is because that kind of commitment to training works.
