Best matches of 2011 ATP World Tour: Part Five – Tennis Special
Tennis fans always want to see a nail-biting finish to every matchup being played to experience the thrill in the game, rather than witnessing a one-sided affair in which a contestant keeps dominating all the way to victory. The
treat gets even better when two of the top class performers encounter on a tennis court and a battle of supremacy goes underway to provide sheer entertainment to the crowd.
Our journey to the recent ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) season continues as we go through another enthralling contest being played by two of the most exciting players in business.
Tomas Berdych vs. Janko Tipsarevic – Barclays World Tour Finals: Round Robin
Every player desires to be a part of the elite eight-man field at the circuit-ending grand finale, the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals and they strive the entire season to book a berth at the coveted event. Currently holding the
seventh spot in the South African Airways ATP World Rankings, Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic was pushed down to the 10th spot in October this year but a title win in Beijing propelled him to the seventh spot to award him a place at the ATP World
Tour Finals at O2, in London.
Janko Tipsarevic had the best run of his career this season, breaking into the top 10 for the first time but still couldn’t make it to the season-ending event. Fortunate for the Serbian, the third seed Andy Murray was struck by
a groin injury and pulled out of the tournament, letting Tipsarevic an opportunity to have his go at the mega event.
Tipsarevic met Berdych in his opening round robin match and posed a thrilling performance which shall be remembered for a long time in the future. With Tipsarevic having the form of his life, a tough competition was anticipated
between the two but the competition which followed proved to be an absolute nail-biter for all the tennis lovers.
Berdych suffered a heart-breaking loss in his opening round robin clash against the world number one, Novak Djokovic, as he frittered away two match points in the game to finish on the losing side. The Czech number one was off
to a sloppy start in the contest against Tipsarevic as well, letting the ninth ranked Serb take the better of him early in the game. Tipsarevic clinched the opening in the most assertive manner, 6-2 and it was thought that he will continue with his winning
roll in the next as well.
The Czech opponent made a brilliant comeback in the set number two and levelled the matchup at one-all after pocketing the set at 6-3. With both men splitting the first two sets in the match, the final set was bound to be a thriller
and it actually proved to be. Aggressive game play from the two tennis stars took the set into a decisive tie-breaker round. The decider also went to the wire, with both men toiling extremely hard to cross the finishing line but it was the sheer determination
of Berdych which reigned supreme in the end. The Czech number one closed out the match at 7-6(6) to register one of the most entertaining victories of the entire 2011 ATP season.
“One point. That's the best [thing] about tennis, that it’s not over until the last ball [has] bounced twice or is in the net,” said Berdych, reflecting on the symmetry of his loss and win. “I think that’s really nice about sports.
That's what I like. I was a bit unlucky on Monday. I got luckier here.”
Both players, however, got eliminated in the later stages of the tournament and the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, claimed a record sixth ATP World Tour Finals title by defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final.
