Business looking to expand in somewhat 'remote' location but needs internet access to fulfill operations. Local area services are of DSL but would like to know if a cell phone provider's PC Cards (wireless) are a better alternative.

Thank You!

  1. stay with local services

  2. The thing with cellular PC cards are you need one per computer (unless you plan to have one computer as a "host" and set up a network through that one) whereas DSL you can just set up a hotspot and connect everyone with wifi or wires.

I'd look into the cost vs speed of each, DSL would probably be cheaper but PC Cards would be more flexable in the future and probably faster (since every computer could have it's own dedicated connection).

  3. Some of the wireless provider internet services (ones offering broadband speeds, etc.) might be faster than DSL for the most part, but you will pay out the nose for it, and connection is always spotty, even in good coverage areas. I notice that the speeds are also all over the map (though this may have been improved since I last used a PCMCIA card) DSL will be much more stable and consistent, though it might be abit slower. It will be more economic as well.

If you are looking at setting up a good number of computers, you could also investigate satallite service, though it can be quite costly up front, but might be worth it in the long run...in the end, its all in how much you are willing to pay for speed.

  4. I would not advise using what's most likely a G2 wireless broadband for a business, it'll be so slow, they'll have your head!
