Question:

Best multivitamin for kidney transplant patient?

by  |  earlier

I had a kidney transplant 3 months ago and I am currently on a prescription multivitamin. The transplant coordinator said I could use an OTC multivitamin to save some money since I have quite a few prescriptions I get filled monthly. I was wondering if anyone knew a good multivitamin for me to take?

Oh, and I know someone will tell me to call my doctor, which I already did - I am waiting for a call back, just thought I'd ask on here too.

Thanks :o)

  1. When I was on PD, I was taking Walgreen's multivitamin with iron. I 360 count bottle was $10-$15 or so, not bad, and only need one a  day.

Since my kidney and pancreas transplant (Mar '07) I haven't needed a vitamin. All my labs are looking great!

Good luck with your new lease on life!

Thank you to all the people and families who decide to donate organs, You are God sent!

  2. Don't take a high dose multi vitamin as you dont want to create problems, but any ordinary 100% of RDA multivitamin and mineral should be perfectly fine. Centrum, mutlibionta, son, solgar or even store brand is probably even ok.

I hope you are doing well after your kidney transplant!

As you are likely on immunosuppressants, it is important to include some protein each day likes eggs, chicken, fish, meat, dairy. (you require the same amount as the general population at this stage, where it would have been higher immediately after the transplant).

Make sure you get lots of calcium foods like milk cheese dairy fortified foods, tinned sardines, salmon etc. Steroid drugs cause bone loss over time, a supplement may be beneficial, but im sure ur medical team have considered this.

Long term issues you may face from the drugs (that you are required to take to help your transplant work at its best)include problems with blood lipids like cholesterol, reduced bone density and weight gain, so it is important to have a healthy diet, and include some exercise++ too if you are able to.

I dont mean to scare you at all, I hope it may be of some help :)
