  1. US Taekwondo Martial Arts Academy!

I'm so glad you asked this question! I've been going to a WONDERFUL TKD academy (the korean word is dojang), USTMA, for the last eight months, and I highly recommend it. It's a great place for both kids and adults (very family friendly in case you want to start too!), very kid-friendly, and allows kids to do the full range of taekwondo experience: forms, sparring, board-breaking, and advanced black belt degrees, with a heavy emphasis on the "do" (mental discipline) part of taekwondo. There's also a big emphasis on respect for parents, and only using taekwondo in defense of self, family and country when absolutely necessary. I'm very excited to be working towards my blackbelt there; my health is much better than it ever has been before, and I've made many good friends with other students in only a few short months of attending. I can't say enough good things about the school.

The grandmaster, Eunggil Choi, is a ninth degree blackbelt as well as a kind and very smart Korean man who has been voted one of the best TKD teachers in the US and who actively works to raise money for cancer research.

The school has three locations: Leesburg, Winchester, and Great Falls. Simply walk in the front door of any of the schools and someone will ask how they can help you and give you all the info you need for signing up. The first website below is a little out of date (says grandmaster Choi is only a seventh degree), so I suggest to get more info that you visit the USTMA website or one of the locations.

Good luck and welcome to the world of taekwondo! Even if you can't come to this particular academy, involving your kids in taekwondo is a great move to make as a parent. You children will thank you when they fall in love with the sport and grow up with healthy bodies and strong minds, and since it was recently added to the Olympics, who knows where they might go from here?
