Best over-the-counter sleeping pill?

I recently decided to stop taking my prescribed sleeping pill, because it makes me hungry. Any suggestions? I talked to my doctor about changing it, and he said most pills for insomnia unfortunately have that effect. Please help!

  1. dont reccommend sleeping pills. Take melatonin supplements instead.

    Sleeping pills are dangerous. I would recommend trying to synchronise your circadian clock again, spend time outside in the sun, watch it rise/set, for a minumum of 30seconds per day. Also if your very tired, then sleep for an hour or two before 3pm.

    If all this does not help, then take melatonin or 30mg of 5HTP. This is a safe supplement which is the precursor to serotonin {the feel good neurotransmitter}, at night it is converted to melatonin {a chemcial that makes you sleep}, so increasing this will help. Also stay in a dark room, no bright lights, and just relax.

  3. i use a special herbal supplement,helps with my insomnia.but i forgot the name of it .i really think most chemicals made my man are bad in long term use.or alot of pills in a shorter amont of time relitivly causes the same amount of damage.

  4. Some over the counter sleeping pills have 25 mg Diphenhydramine (Benedryl) in them. Benedryl has no properties in which to become "hooked" to. Always make sure to note any allergies before taking ANY medications as this may cause a severe allergic reaction. Also, if you do try anything new, whether it be herbal or OTC meds, be sure to make sure that there isn't a reaction between these meds and the meds you are currently prescribed. Your Doctor or Pharmacist should be able cross reference all of your meds  to see if there might be any interactions. Good Luck!

Yes, Their is Melatonin  this is used to get a sleep pattern back on track your body naturally produces this at night but some times your sleep pattern gets out of wack.  You can find it in the vitamin's area of your store I wood not go no more then 3mg of melatonin this is a natural sleep aid so use with causation it don't put you to sleep how it works 20 Min's. just before you are going to go to bed you take one pill you wont even feel sleepy but when that 20 to 25 Min's. is up just go to bed and shout your eyes and that's all you will remember till you wake the next morning  I use melatonin when I can't get good sleep and I wake so many times in the middle of the night that when I do get up for work I was feeling like I never got any sleep.

    You can get it at most regular drug stores. I take 2-3 capsules when needed and always wake up feeling normal, not groggy or drugged.

    You don't wake up groggy like you do with those pm over the counter products.

  9. Try a natural sleep aid form herbal formula such as "true calm" or melatonin. Also doing some relaxation techniques before bed can help. Sleep is important for recovery, relaxationa and re-growth, so getting a good nights sleep is essential .

    Melatonin works great for me when I need an extra deep sleep.

  10. What Violet Pearl said but you can also add a nice hot cup of chamomile tea with the Valerian pills.  I have used that combination as a muscle relaxer when having back spasms and it makes go right to sleep.  Safe unless you have ragweed allergy than skip the chamomile tea.
