Question:

Best place for authentic sushi in Melbourne?

I'm becoming quite frustrated looking for sushi joints that actually live what they're doing. Most of them tend to be run by Chinese and did not learn to make sushi on an authentic cultural foundation. Any suggestions?

  1. Iku Izakaya Japanese restaurant

  2. Hi, here ya go, this place is great:

    Hanabishi Restaurant

    Phone Number: +61 3 9670 1167

    187 King Street

    Melbourne, Victoria, 3000

Here are some reviews I found:

The Age Good Food Guide 2006 score 15/2 1 Hat "Time and time again the Guide has claimed Hanabishi to be Melbourne's best Japanese restaurant. ... At lunchtime, when businessfolk are ploughing into set-price bento boxes, Hanabishi gives little away, It's only when you sit down to dinner - and the more extensive menu - that you realise why people rave."

Gourmet Traveller 2006 Australian Restaurant Guide "The two-level restaurant with its timber floors, bright-blue upholstered chairs and flattering lighting may look a little tired, but the exquisite Japanese food is always sparkling. The simple lunch menu caters to a time-poor business crowd, but it's at night when the knives at Hanabishi really shine."

The Age Good Food Guide 2005 score 16/20 Two Hats "SLIGHTLY seedy King Street may not be the first location that springs to mind for top-notch Japanese food, unless you already know of the beautifully nuanced and often sublime food at Hanabishi."

Gourmet Traveller 2005 Restaurant Guide "The simple furnishings and stark wooden flooring belie the rich dining experience at one of Melbourne's premier Japanese restaurants. The daytime menu is good, but the evening dining has the real flair."

Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Guide Australia 2004, 1 Black Star, Good vegetarian options,'By day, it's a good if undistinguished Japanese restaurant feeding the city suits.By night, a hand-drawn menu of specials emerges, aimed at foodie ex-pats and other discerning eaters-and this is where the action is...has a reasonably priced wine list'

  3. Oh, dear. I have the same sushi problem so I tend to buy and serve my own at home using online recipes. It is also a lot cheaper! Real sushi is pricey!
