Best place in england to go this weekend?

im planning to go out of london this weekend, maybe for a day trip by car.looking for a place/city with beautiful sceneries, historical buildings, water (lake/river/sea etc) and cool shopping place(high street or complex).please give some suggestions.thanks!

York is a lovely place but worth going over a long weekend or drive tonight.  Nearer places that are nice are places like Brighton, Bath and Oxford.

Well, why not take a trip to the Cotswolds? Some beautiful scenery here; Bourton-on-The -Water, Upper and Lower Slaughter, Stow-on-The-Wold,

Broadway....and then take a trip to Bicester Village.....a great selection of cut-price designer outlets.

There are lots of places within easy reach of London that I think you'd enjoy.

Historic towns that are within easy day-trip range include Cambridge, Oxford, Bath and Windsor. They all have good shops, ranging from fashion stores aimed at locals and students to boutiques with appeal for visitors.

Cambridge and Oxford are home to Britain's most famous universities. The buildings of the different colleges are wonderful to visit, and you can also try taking a punt out along the river -- punts are flat-bottomed boats that you steer along using a long pole. Bath is less than two hours from London by train. The ancient Roman baths are unmissable (World Heritage Site), and the Georgian town buildings are some of the best you'll see anywhere -- straight out of one of Jane Austen's novels! ( http://www.beautifulbath.co.uk/ )

Oh yes: Leeds Castle (not in the city of Leeds but near Maidstone in Kent) -- totally romantic, with a moat and towers, just what you expect a fairytale castle to be...

Lastly (only because of lack of space, not because of lack of ideas!) how about Brighton? Only 30 miles south of London and one of the most popular beach resorts in the south-east. There are some fantastic historic buildings here -- particularly the astonishingly exotic Royal Pavilion ( http://www.royalpavilion.org.uk/palace/t... ) -- and lots of great little shops, restaurants, bars and clubs.

York's wonderful, and certainly worth the drive.

But speaking for myself, it's such a fast train journey from London (just over 2 hours) that I'd never bother driving.

I book up two or three weeks ahead and get my return journey for around £24. Cheaper than the fuel if I were driving, and I can relax during the journey. =D

I live in the very place you have described. Keep heading north until you see a sign that reads Scotland. Then head to Edinburgh.
