book at least 14 days in advance.  You can set up fare watches on your my yahoo page.  That's how I keep an eye of fares

It all depends one where you are flying from and to. Some airlines that you would expect to be exspensive are cheap because they have to match up with the low cost carriers (ex. jetblue and southwest). For example I know that from EWR (Newark Airport) Continental has cheap fares to Florida because JetBlue flies there too.
