  1. Who does your wisdom teeth extractions is usually based on your particular teeth. If your wizzies are in proper position or already erupted then they are a straight-forward extraction procedure that your general dentist is more than qualified to perform. If they are highly impacted, positioned near the mandibular nerve or other factors that will make the procedure more complicated, your general dentist will usually refer you to an oral surgeon. Or, if like your sister, there is a medical reason that the surgery needs to be performed in a hospital environment then the procedure may be done in a hospital O.R. instead of a dental office.

Realize that a general dentist is legally qualified and trained to remove even the most impacted tooth. They generally just choose not to because it's easier for all involved if you go to the oral surgeon. An oral surgeon is a dentist that went to school for an additional two years (usually, but this varies by state and country) to specialize in oral surgical procedures and they do far more complex procedures than just removing wisdom teeth. Because they do so much surgery and have specialized equipment, they can usually perform the complex extractions faster and more effeciently than your general dentist.

So, if they are simple extractions your general dentist will usually do them. That's good news, it means your surgery will be less uncomfortable after. I had my upper two wisdoms removed (simple extractions) and continued working all afternoon. It sounds like you are being refered to a local oral surgeon. If he is a licensed oral surgeon, then your treatment should be just as good in town as it would be in Edmonton.

    Good luck!
