Trying to find an apartment for me and my girlfriend that has cheap rent. We can live in a shoebox as long as it's close to cal poly. What cities nearby would be great places to look?

  1. It just depends on where you want to live. If you're looking for just cheap, then I would say look at Pomona. If you want a nice safe area you could look at Walnut, Chino Hills, Claremont, Rancho Cucamonga, or Upland, but  be prepared to pay for it a 1 bedroom is going to run you $1,300-1,600

  2. Rancho Cucamonga is real nice.

  3. We see this every day in this forum: Everyone wants to move here, and is looking for “cheap/affordable and safe". However, such a place just doesn’t exist; the two terms are mutually exclusive. It's all about supply and demand: If it's in SoCal, then it's not going to be cheap to begin with. If it's a safe area, then it's more expensive. If you need good schools, add a couple hundred bucks a month on top of it.

If you want to live here and enjoy the weather, then you have to pay for it. You put up with the smog and the traffic, enjoy the weather and pay your rent or mortgage. My advice is to start checking out craigslist, rent.com, and apartments.com if you are looking to rent. You’ll quickly see that the minimum rent for a non-war zone is about $1,000-$1,200 per month for a studio or 1BR. Really nice areas (like the West LA area) easily run $3,000 or more. Want to live near the beach? Expect to pay a premium.

A quick check of Google maps will show places such as the nicer parts of Pomona, Claremont, Laverne, Montclair, Diamond Bar, Hacienda Heights, and even places in north OC like Brea.

    Good luck.

  4. CPP has state owned off campus housing for students called the Village.  These are really affordable for students, but you won't be able to share a place with your girlfriend.

You will have to compromise safety and cheap.  If you want cheap, you will look into the downtown Pomona area which is east of the campus, but my advice has always been to others, if they tend to feel unfortable in bad neighborhoods, then don't go east of the campus, but at the same time, there is where some of the good local eateries are.

Some neighboring cities that are a great convenience to the campus are Diamond Bar and Walnut, but the appartments can be pretty pricey.
