  1. My personal choice would be Outremont - hands down!

Maybe even Westmount or TMR but you would need to be pretty well off to live in any of those neighborhoods so for you, considering you are currently looking to rent, how about Mile End or even Saint-Henri - why not?

Le Plateau Mont-Royal is pretty nice too and not remotely as expensive to live in as Outremont, Westmount or TMR either! You could easily rent an apartment there. My best friend used to live on Laurier just off of De Lorimier - ever heard of it?

P.S. I cannot afford to buy a house either at the moment so I live in Ghetto McGill on Sainte-Famille Street between Jeanne-Mance and Prince-Arthur Streets which is pretty hip and cool if you ask me! It's also walking distance from Saint-Laurent Boulevard, Saint-Denis Street and Square Saint-Louis to the East and Sainte-Catherine Street West and Sherbrooke Street to the South. Not to mention only a stone's throw from the Mount Royal too! How about that, huh?

  2. Okay, here's the thing, right now a mortgage is was cheaper each month than rent here in Montreal. If you want an affordable place to live without buying, do not live where Lolita mentioned. They are the MOST expensive places to live in Montreal. If you live anywhere other than Outremont, TMR, Saint - Henri, and Westmount, you will be cutting thousands of dollars off your rent per month!

The cheapest place to rent is just off the island on the south shore.

The BEST place to live (in my opinion) is Lasalle. The rent is reasonable and there are so many activities for families and children all year round.

  3. If you can't afford to buy a home, then renting in Montreal (especially a large enough place) might be too expensive.  You Might consider off-island like the North or South Shore
