Best place to snorkle in cancun area???? 10 points!!!?

Question

We just bought our own gear, wont be able to afford scuba diving and since we have never been there, does anyone know the hot spots for snorkling? Maybe a place where there is seashells I can collect?

* We really dont want to go with a guide, B-O-R-I-N-G! And we want to spend our time as we see fit.

Greetings from Cancun!

The really great snorkeling is on the reef and to get to the reef you must have a government approved "guide." That does not mean that they stay with you but they can show you some great sights that you might otherwise miss.

Yal Ku in Akumal  and Garrafon on Isla Mujeres are both Beautiful. You won't need a guide for either and can swim freely. Yal Ku is a huge lagoon which leads out to the sea and you can swim all the way out. There are tons of fish at Garrafon (including Barracudas) but make sure you go to the Garafon Hotel ($4 entry) and use the beach there rather than the Garrafon complex next door ($40 entry and swimming in the same stretch of sea).

If you wat to go by your own I would say you go to Xel-Ha for a day. Is like a Ecologic/natural place, there are wonderful beaches, you can swim woth dolphins  and stuff, when I went to snorkle the I saw a lot of great things and the most amazing one was a ray rigth under me.

well you can book a day to go to isla mujeres in a boat and then when you get there you can buy tickets to go snorkeling. you won't have a tour guide. you guys will be on your own.
