Question:

Best place to visit in Mexico?

I'm a male solo traveller, intrested in visiting Mexico. I'm pretty much open to suggestions really, I have nothing specific in mind, but I'd actually like to see Mexico, not Mexico for tourists. As this idea is really in the very early stages, I'm not even sure on flight prices yet. I assume flights from Britian go via France or Spain, but I assume flights direct from Europe fly into Mexico City?

Is Mexico City worth a visit, or do most people give it a miss?

Thanks for any advice.

  1. Try the Pacific Coast near Zihuatineo(fishing village). Nice stuff!!!!

  2. i come from Acapulco and it is better than Hawaii!

    good luck

  3. I spent the summer in Puebla (1996) which is a large city south of Mexico City.  I thing I love about Puebla is that it has kept it's old time culture and style.  There are no buildings taller than the cathedral even though the population is over a million.

It doesn't have any tourist beaches and the people there are very conservative in dress and tradition.  They had a drive through zoo where you could stop your car right next to a lion (and if not very smart), walk with the lions.

Just FYI - there are still places in Mexico that are not very safe for foreigners.  We always traveled with a buddy.  The scary stories I heard were of people who had gone to unstable locations, alone, or out late, drunk.

  4. There are many comments about how "dangerous" is Mexico, for this reason I was very worry, last april when I went (I am Mexican, but resident sice 8 years in Germany), specially because my husband (German)can't hide, that he is not a foreigner...

But we had a wonderful time, and we where walking in Mexico city and traveling with the metro (subway).  The people is like always very nice, I had to let wait my husband far away until I ask prices (otherwise they told me the higest), but it was wonderful.  Of course you have to inform you about sure time/places, then for exemple the metro is very quick and cheap, but when the people go/come from the school/job is terrible, you feel yourself like a sardine! And is a good opportunity for others to take wallets and purses...

    Some places?

*Michoacan: a wonderful state, there ist the sanctuary of the monarch butterfly, traditional indian partys and beautiful colonial cities:

    * Oaxaca: there is Hutaulco (wonderful beaches), they are rich in natural beaties, but a poor state (don't expect all the hotels have air conditionning):

*Baja California, there are many people from USA, but the wonderful beaches are like a dream:

*Puebla has 2 very interesting cities Cholula and the main city Puebla, from the  UN recognized for their beauty:

*Tlaxcala, they don't have enough money for this reason not many people knows how beatiful the parks are:

*Mexico city, if you are interested in the colonial and prehispanic buildings, you will find here all of them, once called the city of the palaces:

*Jalisco, with colonial cities and beautiful strands, here is a list of the beaches, many of them with few visitors:

  5. Hi there, if you'd like to see the real Mexico, then you should fly to Mexico City. British Airways operates non-stop flights from London to MEX. Other airlines you can consider are KLM from Amsterdam, Air France from Paris and Aeromexico and Iberia from Madrid. Mexico City has many interesting places, including the Centro Historico (downtown) which is a UNESCO world heritage site. Mexico City is vibrant, full of life, hectic, and full of contrasts. People and media always spread bad news about the City but there are thousands of tourists that come here everyday. A classic tour of the city includes the Centro, a visit to the Pyramids of Teotihuacan, a visit to Chapultepec, Polanco, Condesa and Xochimilco. For a more country-side feeling of Mexico you can go to the neighboring towns of Puebla, Taxco and Queretaro, you won't be dissapointed. Take the hop-in hop-off sightseeing bus and see it all. Locals are very keen of foreigners and will always be willing to help. I suggest you to check Wikitravel page on Mexico city and also the guide from frommers.com  If you have any doubt feel free to drop me an email.

  6. I don't know, but if your going take a few hundred thousand illegals back with you,lol =)

Most tourists are attracted to Mexico's beaches, which offer a wonderful respite from the colder winter weather in the northern latitudes   The top two  beaches in Mexico are bookends for the country between them.   Cancun is  an elegant ribbon of beauty along the Caribbean Sea.   Los Cabos is an emerging resort area located on the tip of Baja California where the Gulf of California and the Pacific Ocean embrace. Both are great places to visit.

But Cancun has the highest rating for tourists followed by Mexico City.

    Have Fun =)

  7. Things are getting pretty scary in Mexico these days.  Everytime I've been there I've had a gun put in my face by a 14yr old boy dressed in a military uniform while a cop takes my money.  I was down there to Hermosillo (had to go) 2 years ago and the same thing happened.  The drug lords are making it a living h**l.  Don't go..  Look on the web, type in Mexican police beheadings..also..Mexican corruption..More heads have been chopped off the the drug lords this year that in Iraq..and it doesn't even reach main stream media.

  8. You said you don't want to see the "tourists Mexico".

Congratulations. Even "tourists Mexico" is very nice, it's clear that is not the whole Mexico.

It could be rigth for you to look for a tour across the country, specially the "altiplano".

Mexico City worth it; but you must be carefull, it is not very safe, not even for us (mexican people).

How long are you planning to stay?

How old are you? if you are young the best way to see the "real" Mexico is an exchange. You may contact me for aditional sugestions. I don't work in tourist, I'm a dairyman.

  9. I would have to say Ixtapa. My mom and dad went there and i've seen pics. It's so pretty. Also it is right by the beach so that is nice. Or if you want to see a city with not a lot of tourists thats not a big city. Try going somewhere is San louis potosi. I go there whenever I visit my family and i really like it there its not crowded like big citys.

  10. i would strongly recommend you to visit Acapulco it just to good not to visit

  11. I would have to say Morelia, michoacan or Queretaro.

  12. you can go non stop from LON, if you are going by your self Mexico city would be a great bet also because its not really touristy. but just as in any other big city be safety concious.

just to give you an idea Mexico city has the most museums per capita than any other city in the world so theres def. stuff to do out there.
