I would start in Buenos Aires, spend about a week there, then take the ferry over to Uruguay and spend two weeks traveling along the coast.  You could cross into Brazil and head up the coast, ending up in Rio de Janeiro.

Alternately, you could spend a month checking out Patagonia.  It covers parts of the tips of Argentina and Chile.  You could do some boat tours and walk on glaciers.  That sounds awesome, although I've never done it!

One more idea is to book a trip along the Amazon.  I'm not sure what types of tours they offer, but you would be able to see a lot and go through the rain forest, which would be awesome.

Peru

It has beaches, the andes, the inca culture (including Macchu Picchu), and teh Amazon jungle. Also, it is very cheap. You can't lose.

Buenos Aires and Lima are both important gateway cities in South America so air fares there are going to be good value. BA is still recovering from the economic catastrophe of a few years ago and is therefore very good value. It's a city that has to be experienced. As the Argentians say, Paris is the BsAs of Europe. From there fly up to Lima which again is very good value then take your time to gradually ascend the Andes to visit the Inca sites.

Argentina and Brazil.

In Argentina you can visit buenos aires, the most european, elegant and cosmopolitan city in whole Latin America.

Bariloche and Patagonia, great ski resorts, glaciers, lakes, perfect for outdoor sports.

Iguazu falls in the north, and then you can croos to Brazil.

Many beautiful beaches to visit, or you can fly to Rio de Janeiro and experience the magic of this city.

I would start in Ecuador.  It's quite a small country, and you can bus from north to south in about 10 hours.  It's a great country to visit, you can climb volcanoes, admire old colonial architecture, shop in fantastic crafts markets and take one of the most amazing train rides of your life (the Devil's nose).  Ecuadorians are very friendly and it's a country full of surprises.  Spend about 15 days here then fly to Lima in Peru (it's a fairly cheap flight).

A day or two in Lima is enough, so take another internal to Cuzco and go on the Inca Trail.  It's unforgettable, but make sure you book your trip in advance.  You could then fly south to Lake Titticacca or the Nazca Lines.  From here, you can decide if you want to zip over to Bolivia or spend longer in Peru.

Both Peru and Ecuador are very easy to travel in, costs are low, food is great  and although they're both quirky, they're less intimidating that some other South American countries.  I loved every second I spent there.  Enjoy!

You could travel through Mexico, Belize, and Guatamala for 10 days each, seeing the amazing Aztec and Mayan Cultures...

Alternatively, how about a month in Peru on the Trek to Machu Piccu in the Andes?

First of all some people need some help with their geography. Guatemala and Mexico are in Central America not SOUTH America and the question asked about South America. Sorry that just really bugs me sometimes when people think that all latin american countries are on the same continent.

Anyways...I would def travel in Argentina...so many great things to see-Buenos Aires, Salta, Cordoba, Mendoza, Bariloche, Iguazu Falls, La Boca, Mar del Plata. If you were going to choose 2 countries I would either do Argentina and Uruguay or Argentina and Chile.
