There is a wonderful restaurant near the theater district in London.  It is called "Porter's" and specializes in English food---cooked WELL, and affordable.  The address is 17 Henrietta Mews, just around the corner from Covent Garden.

Start out with a Kir Royale!  Cheers!

The best place for Indian food is brick lane in Alegate, near Spitalfields market. They have a huge row and the food is fab. I went to one of the restaurants that was touting, because the good ones don't need to advertise. don't be fooled by the free stuff like a bottle of wine, they always charge for it. It's a great experience and really lively down there and suitable for a family as well.

The best experience I had was Jamie Oliver's Fifteen.  I am passionate about cooking and food in general, so it was a once in a lifetime treat!  The waiter's knew so much about the food, and didn't mind me constantly bombarding them with questions about everything. I could also see into the kitchen, and watched the food being prepared.  The only downside was that the man himself wasn't there!   It was £100 each, but that was for a 7 course meal and the matching wine package, and it was well worth it..... If you want to treat yourself to something special, and you are into excellent food and wine, then this is the place to go!

depends where you want to go, conran restaurants can't really be faulted, and are reasonably priced and they're everywhere....  there's literally thousands of small independant restaurants and bars which aren't bad too... it really depends on what kind of food you'd like, the atmosphere and the price....

my personal favourites are the laughing gravy in blackfriars for modern english or something like quaglino's by st, james park for something a little nicer...

I love Belgos near Covent Garden. Excellent mussels, lobster and steaks and fabulous desserts and it's quite reasonably priced for London. You may have to share a long table with other people though,

It's also a micro-brewery with some truly excellent biers.

The atmosphere is really great with some very interesting industrial architectural features. You can also see everything happening in the kitchens. The service has always been spot-on with the wait-staff all dressed like monks. And in fact when I was pregnant I was treated like a princess whenever I went there.

October is an EXCELLENT time to go there! Last year for Oktoberfest you could have a starter, 3 or 4 main courses and a sweet (all reduced down to tapas size portions), plus 3 or 4 different biers. There were 4 adults when we went and between us all we sampled everything on the menu! It was FAB!

Children eat free there too. But the usual chicken nuggets and fish fingers are all home-made from scratch and LOVELY! The kids had to protect them from the grown-ups.

Rules on Maiden Lane,Covent Garden. Oldest restaurant in London. Trad. british food, inc. game,stews & pies, and proper puddings. Old fashioned decor and waiter dress. Look for the mural of Sir Maggie Thatcher in 'Brittania' mode. Reasonably priced for London and for what you get. Also there's a Sam Smiths pub just along the lane towards Trafalgar Square, serving proper Yorkshire Bitter at Yorkshire prices(nearly), called the Chandos, I believe.(I'm not usually concentrating properly by the time I reach there)
