Question:

Best places to go in Mexico?

I googled it and a lot of stuff about beaches and ocean front resorts came up, of course! But we were wanting to do something different. Maybe see the ruins, old cathedrals, historical type things. We were also planning to leave towards the end of October and be there for a couple of weeks in time for the Day of the Dead festivities.

Also is there anything we should know about Mexico during that time, climate, weather etc.

Thanks!

  1. Mexico City is a MUST!!!! It's one of the world's greatest cities. It's a whole world itself. Weather in october is nice with mean temps. in the 70's.

  2. You are going to Mexico at a great time!  The festivals for Day of the Dead are really spectacular- the best in the following cities: island of Janitzio in Lago de Pátzcuaro, Oaxaca, Patzcuaro, Huejutla, Chiapa de Corzo, Jesús María, Tzintzuntzan, Míxquic and Tecate.  Since these cities are spread out across Mexico, you really have a great opportunity to choose other attractions nearby.

For ruins- nothing beats Quintana Roo and the Yucatan.  Pyramids, ancient ceremony sites, natural aquarium, etc-  http://www.insidepv.com/Cancun-Mexico-Be...

If you're looking for museum style culture - Nothing beats Mexico City.  Guadalajara is also just a magnificent city- I've seen it referred to as "the most beautiful city in Latin America" more than once and I can see why.  Shopping, history, art and culture are fantastic here.  Tepic is another city that offers a great range of cultural attractions- and an easy drive to nearby Mazatlan, etc.

If you want to see cathedrals- I would recommend Tepic area- the nearby cities include spanish missions, cathedral ruins, - do a search on the web and you will find some enticing photos.  My favorite cathedral so far though, is the one in Talpa, Mexico's Holy City.  It was absolutely magnificent- it looked like one of the ancient cathedrals in Europe and we were lucky enough to witness an elaborate pilgrimage where a handful of pilgrims walked into town from who knows where, then walked on their knees up the grand steps all the way to  front of the cathedral-  it was truly magical.

  3. I have lived, worked and traveled in Mexico,Central and South America for years. The link below is for one of the most comprehensive sites on Mexico I have seen to date.It should have all the information you need to plan your itinerary.Feel free to email me if you have any specific questions or concerns.

The weather in Mexico shouldn't be a problem for you anywhere in late October or early November. The higher elevations can  sometimes be cool in the early mornings & evenings and I usually carry a lightweight fleece.

If you plan on being in one of the more well known Day of the Dead destinations  such as Juanizio,Mixquic,Oaxaca,Merida or

Chiapa de Corzo it might be prudent to secure a hotel reservation as soon as possible.

  4. You should be O.K.with the weather.  It may still be humid depending on location.

Oaxaca city is what I would suggest.

The ruins there are unreal and its not just a two hour tour , one can spend days exploring all the places

I am not sure of the exact elevation but its up there and considerably cooler at any time of year.

Gringo        I went to "Tecoanapa" ( youtube.com) search tecoanapa.  Check it out.  Its a very small town north of Acapulco where 6 students living at my place in Aca 4 days a week live

  9. Try the following cities: Queretaro, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosi, Guanajuato, Aguascalientes, which are beautiful colonial cities in the centrasl part of the country. Although you can also go a little way south to Oaxaca, Merida (extremely beautiful city, it is referred to as "la Blanca Merida", the White Merida), Villahermosa, Taxco, and so many more it would take me hours just to mention them, but these are the most important. Oh, and if you're planning to stay for the Day of the Dead then you must not miss going to the state of Michoacan, there's a town called Patzcuaro that's famous for their rituals and celebrations.

As to the weather, at the end of October it is still very pleasant, still warm and it's not raining any more.

Enjoy your trip, you'll remember it forever.
