Question:

Best places to teach english abroad?

Within 3 years I hope to teach english abroad- I already have a Bachelors Degree and TEFL certification....

I Am equally interested in China, Japan, S. Korea, Russia and Czech Republic.....

The determining factor on which place I'll choose will be finances- will I need to pay for a flight over and seek out and pay for my own apt? I don't want to leave the experience without money to even get home...

Any suggestions?

  1. look up realgap.com they offer english teaching programmes in China and best of all you get paid for them.

  2. I've heard that, in terms of finances, South Korea is your best bet.  Oftentimes they will supply your apartment (which you may have to share with one or two other English teachers) and will refund your airfare after you're there for a certain amount of time (I think a few months).  South Korea also has a lot of national holidays, which equals a lot of days off school, and many schools will give you one month paid vacation after you spend a year teaching there.  Compared to Japan, South Korea is much, much cheaper.  Many people I've known have been able to save money and travel while they're in South Korea, but my friend who taught in Japan wasn't able to save much money at all because Japan is so expensive.  South Korea is also super into English at the moment, in their effort to become a bigger player in the world market, so there is a high demand for English teachers.  I'm not positive, but I think having your TEFL certificate would qualify you to teach in Japan.  Japan has much stricter standards in terms of education, and my friend who taught there got his masters before he went (I think in TEFL, also).  I don't know anything about English programs in China, Russia or the Czech Republic, but any of those places would be really cool to visit.  I was in Prague this summer, and it's a fantastic city.

    Best of luck!

  3. I guess this depends on the school of your choice. When international teachers get recruited to teach a foreign language here in the States, it depends on the contract each school. A friend of mine included the board and lodgings with a contract of three years. Another friend only got away with the airfare, she was on her own when she got here. Of course, the school helped, but, all the expenses are hers. Although, she got a five-year contract. So, plan, plan and choose carefully. Goodluck!
