Thinking of a Samsung plasma, or should I just go for the LCD? Is 1080p LCD better than 720 plasma? I saw somewhere that plasma pictures are much better but don't last as long. Thanks for your help!

  1. First do not believe the hype that an LCD television will last longer than a plasma.  Both technologies have a half brightness rating of 100,00 hours, so barring any defects or external circumstances affecting your television by the time you are ready to replace your new flat panel, it will probably be with an OLED or some other technology that is in it's infancy now.

As far as 1080 vs. 720, There are a few factors at play, such as screen size.  If you are simply looking at a 42" screen it will be very hard, at any reasonable distance to tell the difference between 720 and 1080.  I actually prefer the image of last year's 42" pioneer 720, to every 1080 LCD I have seen.

Concerning gaming on a PDP(plasma display panel) I have seen it done, and many new plasma's will come with pixel orbiter to reduce the affects of image retention.  However if you are a serious gamer and will be spending more than six hours at a time playing, you might want to be a little wary.  Many times a video game will have a stationary icon, like a menu, score counter, or health meter.  This will after time "burn-in" to the panel.  This will not be permanent and is almost never sever enough to affect the performance of your tv.  It is something to keep in mind.

If you are looking for the BEST plasma TV's they are made by Pioneer, the Elite and Kuro series blow all other TVs out of the water.

  2. For plasma, go with Panasonic or Pioneer.  These two companies have better experience along with better quality with this technology than most other companies.  Pioneer is particularly ahead of the curve when it comes to plasma with the introduction of their Kuro line of plasma televisions.

For LCD, go with Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, Mitsubishi, or Sharp.  The best all around for LCD sets is Sony.  Samsung and Sony are under a joint venture in manufacturing LCD panels, but Sony has an edge on the quality of the other components in their televisions over Samsung.

Plasma technology has improved markedly over previous generations, which improve their contrast ratio further, increase their longevity, and reduce the incidence of stationary image retention.

LCD has also improved with greater contrast ratios (though they still do not compare to plasma in this regard), faster speeds, greater viewing angles, and improved backlighting designs with better CCFL (cold cathode florescent light) systems and the introduction of LED-based systems.

In regards to resolution, 1080p matters only if you get a television that's around 40 inches or larger.  Otherwise, you may not see much benefit with resolutions higher than 720p on a smaller set.  I would, however, recommend to get a set that is capable of 1080p whenever possible.

I would not recommend brands of TVs that are not listed and would strongly advise you to avoid various no-name "bargain" brands, such as Vizio or Olevia.  The biggest problems with the bargain brands are that there is essentially no service infrastructure for these products, including virtually no service data being available to aid in repair.  The bargain sets are, essentially, disposable and meant to be discarded when they break, which is wasteful and more expensive in the long run.  This is particularly so since the bargain sets are not designed and manufactured to the same kind of standard that the recommended brands tend to make their sets to.

In conclusion, so long as you stick with a television from one of the companies that I've mentioned as recommendations, basically get whatever TV set looks the best to you, has the features you want, and is within your budget.

  3. get the LCD 1080p is the latest and most good looking ,but if u have a like a 32" LCd that's 1080p and you compared it to a 32" LCD that's 720p they both look the same unless u look really close which a lot of people would probably would not do

plasma's do make better pictures ,but some of the new LCD's look same if not better . ohh ye plasma's show darker blacks and brighter whites than an LCD because plasmas burn color's inside and like i said before they make better pictures ,but u should get an LCD mostly beacuse plasmas have burn ins so if u'r playing a game and you maybe pause the game and go somewhere else for like 20 mins it will make a burn in ,but it goes away in few days .

umm hope i helped ,i recommend that u buy an 1080p LCD
