Best prepaid credit card for one-time expensive purchase?

I know nothing about prepaid cards, but I may need one soon to make a purchase. I don't have a job or a credit card, but I want the backing of credit card company in case the seller fails to refund the item if I return it.

The item being purchased is expensive - approx. $3000.

BTW, I don't mind linking to my bank account.

Is there any prepaid credit card to meet my needs, without high fee's either at startup or later on?

  1. If you don't mind linking to your bank account, and your main concern is having the backing of a credit card company in case the seller fails to refund-- a good idea might be to open up a PayPal account (it's free) and link your bank account to that.  From there, you have the protection that a credit card company would give you.

While the fees of prepaid cards are not much in comparison to how much you're spending (costs 9.95 for activation, 4.95 to "reload", 4.95 monthly regardless, and 2.50 for ATM use) you cannot count on a prepaid card providing you with the same protection as a credit card company or bank does.
