I want to have better sound quality using he ps3 while watching blue rays. Might sound like a no brainer but im currently connecting the ps3 though a HDMI cord and then taking the sound from the tv using av cable(the red and white ones) to my surround sound..would using an optical cable stright from the PS3 be better? the then using HDMI to get the picture? Does anyone recommend the calabration discs that bestbuy sells to improve picture quality by helping you adjust settings, work or is there a better way? any addional comments would be great as well..Thanks

  1. It is very simple.

PS3 to TV via HDMI cable.

PS3 s/pdiff output to AV receiver

Optional, if you use off-the-air antenna, s/pdif out of TV to AV receiver.

  2. To enjoy Dolby Digital sound (normally 5.1 in blurays and DVD, sometimes even 7.1) and DTS 5.1, you need to connect an optical cable from the PS3 to your receiver and then you can listen to the wonderful Dolby digital and DTS sound that you deserve. The red white cable or RCA cable from your TV to your receiver is not digital but matrix Pro Logic surround sound, which is OK, but not the best way to listen to DVDs and blurays.

You need to keep your video out from the PS3 to your HD television to get the best video image. To setup your PS3, you do this, keep the video at HDMI, then go down to the audio setting and change it from HDMI to optical out, this way you can watch the video on HDMI (through your TV) and the sound will go through your receiver's optical audio in and you will have HD video with Dolby Digital. This set up means that the sound will not come out through the TV.

Now for your question on calibration, follow the instructions on CNet.com so you can get the proper calibration on your HD tv.  There is the basic set up and the intermediate setup that uses the Digital Video Essentials dvd, Avia guide to home theater, and Sound and Vision 's Home theater tune up DVD.
