Best "reads" for preschool and beyond...?

Asked this in a couple other areas but...

Trying to build a collection of children's books...

I've tried searching the internet for lists of good titles, but it's proving overwhelming. Looking for classics and less popular finds...

Any suggestions for good fiction and non-fiction books for pre-k to 2nd grade (4 to 8 years old)?

    Going On A Bear Hunt

    Dear Zoo

    Room on The Broom

    The Gruffalo

    Non-Fiction:-we dont have that many but...

    -Animal books-wildlife books with picture

    -Magazines (esp for older ones) with info and fun things about themes they enjoy.

    I know I've only posted a few ideas but i hope they are helpful.


  2. my kids love to read "What Makes A Rainbow" by Betty Schwartz, it is a great book, and very colorful.. a great read for all young children!

  3. Amber and bittersweet already given you some of my faves!! going on a bear hunt top of the lot. But also to add: Rosie's walk, happy families series  by the Ahlbergs, the snail and the whale, and please check out Finding the green stone by Alice Walker.

  4. I really do not have much experience with book selection past preK/K so these are what I like to see in a "library" for this age group

    I like to see some for each genre

    Wordless Books such as Tuesday (Wiesner)

    Narrative Story books such as Where the Wild Things Are (Sendak)

    Informational Books:  Byron Barton has a large selections

    Poems such as Jamberry (Degen)  (EXCELLENT BOOK!)

    Predictable/Repetive Books such as

    Brown Bear Brown Bear/Polar Bear Polar Bear and other books by Bill Martin Jr.

    Little Red Hen

    The Very Hungry Caterpillar (Eric Carle)

    Concept Books: My Colors, Mis Colores (Emberly); Color Dance (Jonas); Tana Hoban has quite a few basic concept books.  Concept books include colors, shapes, alphabet, numeracy, opposites etc.

    Dr. Seuss books...any of them are WONDERFUL to have available.

    We Both Read Series are awesome shared reading for those beginner readers

    The Sunshine Readers are great Beginner Reader books.

    From Head to Toe-another Eric Carle book is a great book to support early pretending

    Song books by Iza Trapani..This author illustrates and extends nursery rhymes and other very common/popular "songs"

    Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina has always been popular

    It's great to have various versions of the same book...such as various versions of Goldilocks, the Three Little Pigs, The Wheels on the Bus, Nursery Rhymes, Old MacDonald Had a Farm and etc.

    Silly Sally by Audrey Wood is a very popular early Elmentary Book.

    Whose Nose and Toes by John BUtler

    I Went Walking by Sue Williams

    The Napping House by Audrey Wood
