Best radar detector on a budget?

Well i drive a 1987 Monte Carlo SS aerocoupe so from the start cops are just itching to pull me over....i need the best radar detector i can get for lets say less than 300 bucks...i live in NY so i am safe from the law and i need to get this before my car gets back from the paint shop in a week

For around $300, I recommend the Beltronics Vector 995 (see link in sources). In addition to providing a detection range of 10 times that of cheap radar detectors plus detection of POP and instant-on radar, the Bel Vector 995 is invisible to the VG2 police radar detector detector (if you need to be concerned when driving to Canada, for instance). If you can spend about $20 more, you can get a lot more in the Beltronics Pro RX65 (also in sources). The Bel Pro RX65 radar detector is one of the top five best radar detectors in the world, providing excellent radar detection performance but a little too high on false alerts. Depending on your budget, you could spend more for a radar detector like the Valentine One or Bel STi which give fewer false alerts.

The best radar detectors also detect laser. But if your radar detector is alerting to laser, you've got less than 0.2 seconds to check your speed and slow down. If you are concerned about laser, your only option is a laser jammer. Like radar detectors, laser jammers are also legal in nearly every US state. A laser jammer jams the laser gun's speed reading, allowing you time to check your speed and turn off the jammer. There are a number of radar/laser combo systems that provide alerts for radar and laser, and also jam laser. The best available today is probably the Escort Passport 9500ci.
