  1. The technique that I like is to lay flat and be perfectly still. Then, focus on specific parts of your body and reflex them as much as possible. Start with your feet, then move up to your calves, your upper legs, and so on to your neck and eyes. When you get to the top of your body, you should be very relaxed. At that point, I visualize something that I am trying to accomplish. For instance, if I am going to be in an athletic competition, I try to visualize everything that I will need to do in as much detail as possible in order to do my best. However, you can visualize any aspect of your life. This technique is very close to hypnosis. Usually before I start, I tell myself how long I want to relax for and that when that amount of time has passed, I will be very relaxed and yet very refreshed and alert. Twenty minutes or so is usually perfect. The trick is to let absolutely nothing interfere with your relaxation time if possible and to maintain a tight focus on not letting your mind drift. If you have no specific goal to focus on, focus on a number first, starting with "1". If you start thinking of anything else, start thinking of the number "2" and, again, try not to let your thoughts drift. In time, you will increase your ability to concentrate as well as be able to enter this state of relaxation very quickly. I would set an alarm clock to light music in case you fall asleep the first few times (which is fine), but, after awhile, you shouldn't need this.

    Good luck, and happy relaxing!
