Best route for sailing around the world?

If you were going to sail around the world, what route would you take? Where in the U.S. is the best place to start and finish? Which direction do you go around the globe?

No matter where you start at some point you will fall off the edge.

Anyone who is qualified to sail a boat around the world is going to know all of the possible routes and alternatives.  This isn't the sort of thing you can do without lots of planning and preparation.

Go West young man!! From the West coast of the US the prevailing winds and currents run westwards to Japan north of the equator, so sail in latitudes slightly north of the equator (via Miami will be fine) and they will help you all the way to the Philippines. Your route will take you between Taiwan and the Philippines, to the south of Vietnam and the Malaysian peninsular (beware the pirates in the straights of Malacca!!).

Onwards passing south of Sri Lanka and north west to the entrance of the Red Sea.

So far the winds and currents have been (generally) with you, but now in the Red Sea the wind is from the North West so dead against you (and there is no current to help you), so it's on the motor all the way to the Suez Canal and onwards to the Mediterranean.

Sailing Westwards in the Mediterranean is OK as the winds are generally from the North. Onwards south of Crete and Sicily and north of Tunisia onwards to Gibraltar and out into the Atlantic Ocean.

To cross the Atlantic from Gibraltar sail south west to the Canary Islands, then it's downwind (and with the currents) all the way to Caribbean.

From the Caribbean, you can sail North to the East Coast of America, or go through the Panama canal and north up the West Coast of America to the starting point.

I am sure there are better places to find this kind of information for your research project than on yahoo answers.  do some homework and research the voyages of some of the worlds great explorers, magellan, cook, etc and some modern day adventurers, like those who sailed in the many round the world races.  look up bernard montessier, he entered a race way back in the 60's (i think) and when he was close to finishing the race, he decided to go around again!  

there are many books and manuals on the subject.
