Best route from Dallas, TX to Colorado Springs, CO?

I'm going to be moving to Colorado Springs soon... From the info I've gathered online, it seems like there are two main ways to get to CO from the Dallas area. Should I drive to Amarillo, cut across the NE corner of New Mexico and then up to Colorado Springs, or should I drive north through Oklahoma and Kansas, then drive west through Kansas to Colorado.

I have to make this trip twice, once in a Corolla and once in a Uhaul.

I've been to Oklahoma, but not New Mexico or Kansas.

  1. lol take a plane and have the moving truck drive!

  2. We just drove from Longview, TX (east of Dallas) to Denver CO in April and we took the route from Dallas through Amarillo, New Mexico, up into Raton, NM, then crossed into Colorado going through Colorado Springs on I-25 and on into Denver.  It was about a 16 hour drive total.  We stayed overnight in Amarillo.  My son-in-law, who is from Denver, says he has taken the route through Kansas and Oklahoma but doesn't recommend it because it's long and boring.  The route through NM is very scenic and we enjoyed the drive.  Yes, I agree with the person who said they saw antelope on the side of the road in NM.  We did too.  They were all over the place, much like we see cattle in the pastures along Texas highways.  Have a great trip!

  3. Google maps seems to think the Amarillo route is best, but only by about 30 minutes.  However, northern NM and the front range in Colorado is a MUCH nicer drive than through OK and Kansas.  Definitly go the southern route!

  4. I have made this trip 2 - 3 times a year for my entire life.  I have actually measured the two routes, and the Amarillo Route is shorter.  Just head northwest on 287.  When you get to Amarillo, there is a shortcut to get to Dalhart without going through Dumas - check your map for the Boys Ranch Road.

The toughest part of the drive is through northwest Texas and through New Mexico where roads are only two lane.  They have built more passing lanes, tho.  When you are in New Mexico look for the Antelope by the side of the road.
