My family has been going to Mountain Creek and places in Vermont for years now...we want to try something different and a little bit closer than Vermont. Any suggestions on places within New Jersery, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York area (anything near Long Island)??

P.S. Most of us are advanced skiers

  1. Butternut, in the Berkshires, is probably your best bet. It's about 3hrs from Long Island and is a nice hill although not much of a challenge. Jiminy Peak is nicer if you are planning to stay over but I like Butternut better for the skiing and the lodge at Jiminy is rediculously expensive on the weekends. I'm cheap and will only stay there midweek.

You can be in the poconos in an hour and a half once you cross the GW but I can tell you that the crowds at camelback and shawnee are horrendous, I've never tried Blue but heard good things about it.

The catskills are easier to get to from the island but both hunter and windham will probably bore you.

  2. vernon valley in NJ or Hunter mountain upstate... Pennsylvanias got some good places too

  3. A place I know you will like is Windham. It is family oriented but offers some challenging slopes. It is a little bit smaller than Hunter, but much larger the Mountain Creek (I am a passholder at MC). I am guessing it is going to be an hour and a half farther than Mountian Creek from Long Island.

Some other suggestions include Bellayre, Hunter Mountain (crowded), Plattekill (Challenging but no snowmaking and only open Friday-Sunday), Camelback PA.

  4. Most of the mountains in the Berkshires and the Catskills are pretty easy terrain and they aren't very big resorts. I work at Jiminy Peak and although it's not very big, the snow has been really nice so far this year. They have a deep base and groom nightly. Also the accommodations are really nice and there is a brand new lodge with some decent food =]. The night skiing is also second to none in the east.  A cool new feature is Zephyr, the new wind turbine that rises above one of the trails. its enormous with blades spinning in an 80 yard diameter circle, so that will make your decision easier if you are environmentally concience

  5. There are no mountain resorts on Long Island.  Try the Berkshires.
