Best speaker system to use with the onkyo tx-sr 605?

Ok so after extensive reading, the Onkyo tx-sr 605 seems to be a no brainer in deciding which moderately priced reciever to buy. Now I just need a good 5.1 speaker system to go with it. I'm looking to spend about $500 on speakers but am flexible if something is a few dollars more and amazing. Thanks for any recommendations.

  1. Look at the Onkyo model HTSP908. It is technically considered a HTIB, but it includes the txsr605 as well a great sounding onkyo 7.1 speaker package along with an upconvert dvd player.

Everybody has there own ear for speakers. Be sure to ask your salesman to demonstrate a few speaker packages for you.

  2. I was in the process of writing a reply that suggested you consider spending a bit less on the receiver and more on the speakers (The usual recommendation is to spend about 2x as much on the speakers as the receiver).

But I had a look at CNet's latest recommendations for surround speakers (See link) and came across the review (2nd link) of the Onkyo SKS-HT240.  While I'm sure you can get better speakers, the price for this set (as low as $350) makes this difficult to recommend.

If you like the looks -- a bit "different" -- they would appear to be a lot of bang for the buck ...and you can't get a much better match for an Onkyo receiver!

I haven't heard them ... but both the reviewer and owners have some good things to say.

  3. That is an excellent receiver.  I own a home theater company and sell many of them.

From my experience, I like Jamo speakers.  They are good quality and have different price ranges for different models.

  4. All I can really say for sure. Is pick whatever sounds the best to you. Everyones ears are different.

Personally, I prefer Definitive Technology brand speakers. I like their build quality but even more so I like their sound quality. I have been a die hard fan of theirs for over 10 years. Yes I have listened to other but I always come back. I have 2 complete surround sound systems from them. One big system and one Sub Sat system.

They are typically a little bit out of the price you indicated They start at about 600-700 bucks and go up from there.

    There are good alternatives though.

Look at Polk, Klipsch, Infinity, and even Cerwin Vega.
