Best stories of 2010 Formula One season (Part 2)
Sir Frank Williams
The nine-time constructors' championship winner, Sir Frank Williams has a complete different view. For him the best story of the season is the one that he enjoyed the most, and that took place at the Korean Grand Prix.
He laughed as he said, "Mark Webber for spinning off in Korea and taking out Rosberg."
The Korean Grand Prix, the third last race of the season, and of course one of the most crucial, also became the most thrilling. As the newly built track held its debut Grand Prix, the dangerous pit lanes, the freshly laid slippery asphalt and above all
the heavy rain fall, all added a lot of drama on the race weekend. As the Formula One cars cruised through the dangerous circuit, one after the other, drivers kept slipping off the track. However, the most theatrical of all the slips was seen by the Red Bull
driver, Mark Webber who went too wide off the track, slipped off, and during the manoeuvre, took the Mercedes GP driver, Nico Rosberg along with him, who was heading for a certain podium finish. Taken by surprise and shock for what had happened with the young
German, he had to wrap up his race and kept cursing Webber forever.
Gerard Lopez
The majority shareholder of RenaultF1 team, Gerard Lopez was quick to tell that his favourite story of the season was the ‘Red Bull duo rivalry’, which he believes was as interesting as any T.V soap.
Lopez explained saying, "The Sebastian Vettel vs. Mark Webber rivalry and particularly the front-wing saga and how it all led to a major conspiracy theory. There were a lot of discussions surrounding Red Bull's front wings and whether they were flexible
as well as the choice at Silverstone between Sebastian and Mark. So as an item of interest and potential conflict, I would say Red Bull's front wings."
The Austrian team’s front wings have been the centre of attention for the entire media, race fans and also for the rival teams all through the season. For one reason or the other, the team kept on explaining and clarifying their position on the car’s front
wing, which kept bothering them, although it was the second big strength of the team’s car, after its F-duct.
At the Silverstone Circuit, the team management gave the front wing of Webber’s car to Vettel, saying that the later was in a better position at the points’ tally. The action was taken very offensively by Webber, who after a very aggressive race stood at
the top of the podium and commented on his victory, ‘Not bad for a No.2 driver’. Although the team management tried to clear the air, however, the flames of anger between the team and driver were visible till the very last race of the season.
The other and more heated story of the front wing rose as all the rival speculated that the front wing of Red Bull’s RB6, is far more flexible than permitted by FIA. Although very strict tests were carried to check the wings and the team came out clear,
yet all the team kept on insisting until the end of the season that there is some illegality in the wings.
Laurence Edmondson
Last but not the least the race analyst believes that Ferrari's team orders scandal was the best story of the season. However, he believes that the Italian team actually helped remove an ‘absurd’ rule of FIA which actually made no sense. He explained saying,
“The good news is that F1 has learnt its lesson from the whole saga and the rule has been scrapped."
