I am moving to Australia from Canada and I am wondering which suburb I should live. I want to work in Sydney, so one close would be best.

What about Fairlight?

  1. the northern beaches (mona vale, collaroy, manly, dee why, etc.) are a really nice place to live. but if you have a family, then i reccomend looking at areas such as beecroft, epping, carlingford, and pymble.

  2. North Haven (near port macquarie)right on the coast of australia

  3. Don't even think about going to redfern, it is a dump and could do with a good straffing. Unless you know the areas, stay away from most of western suburbs. Along the coast is pretty nice, however it can get very expensive to rent a place. I think the going rate for a small flat is around $400 a week (Maybe higher, not sure).  You can commute from every place by either train, bus or ferry, etc. I had relatives that lived in the Manly area and it was a nice place to be, I think it is very expensive now though. Have you though about the other major cities to live and work in, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Darwin, Hobart, Adelaide etc.  Perth is a great place, however pretty isolated, brisbane has great weather, melbourne is a partiers dream (apparently), Adelaide is, well Adelaide. And Hobart is in Tasmania.  Have fun living over here.

  4. On a budget maybe Turrella area. 9 stops on the subway to downtown sydney

  5. Fairlight on Sydneys northern beaches is nice ,or any of the northern beaces, however it is a bit more expensive than other suburbs

  6. Sydney city? What's your scene? Sounds like you want to be near the beach. Nice. Fairlight / Manly means catching the ferry across the harbour to get to work probably. Kingsford - bus to the city. Surry Hills walk to the city. Paddington - bus. Bondi Junction train to the city and bus to Bondi beach walk to Centennial Park.McMahon's Point (walk up the hill and)train to Sydney. Further up the hill is Crowsnest which is very central and has its high points. West from the city to Glebe or Ultimo where there is a pick of Darling Harbour, the casino or lunch at the fish markets. A bit further within taxi distance there is Annandale if you wanted to to go to the Thai Buddhist temple and not be too near the flight path from the airport but close enough to Norton Street Leichhardt which is  a slice of Italy. Hang on to the south from Glebe is Newtown which is packed with cheap restaurants with the student crowd. What about Elizabeth Bay where you can walk across to the yacht club and go sailing however I always found the walk through Kings Cross off putting with the working girls however it's a bit cleaner lately. Truly with the price of petrol and the clogged roads who needs it. Somewhere close to the city can be very convenient if public transport is available. These days you can live right in the city in an apartment or close by in a terrace house or semi-detached house provided you have the money. Are you planning to purchase a place or rent or share?
