  4. Yama!!!!

I went to NYU for two years and this is by far the VERY BEST sushi restaurant in New York. I've only heard about it from realy New Yorkers and have been to a few locations. You would really know about it unless you were just in the neighborhood walking by. They give you the BEST quality fish. My dad is a sushi fanatic and when he came to visit, I took him there. He RAVES about it to everyone and it was almost 5 years ago. The one on Irving Pl by Union Square is the best in my opinion.

  5. Make a reservation - soon - and have lunch [11:30 to 2:pm]

at Karuma Zushi on East 47th Street between Fifth and Madison (7 East 47th Street, Second Floor).  The sushi here is wonderful, but the prices are outrageous.  Go for lunch - they have five or six sushi lunches for less than $25 (various sushi/sashimi combinations with miso soup).

  6. i say try anywhere, as long as you know that the people making it are actually japanese. sushi making is a skill that requires years and years to master, its not just 'roll the stuff up and tada' sort of food.

i generally find many koreans and chinese try to make sushi, because they know it sells, but they make the worst possible sushi ever. its cut roughly, the fish is filleted unevenly and the presentation is disgusting. most bad impressions people get about sushi are usually because they didnt go to a place where there was a proper japanese sushi chef.

i suggest asking the staff how many years experience the chef has etc, and where they trained. judging from their response you can gerenally tell whether the sushi there will be great or not :)
