I'm talking raw fish, full-sized rolls (not slices), no sushi trains, and lots of flavour.

  1. I am almost positive that it is still there.  In the old ANA hotel, which is now the Shangri-La hotel.  It is right up the top of the tower with amazing food and even better food.

I took some of the top overseas fashion buyers (very demanding!) up there and they were blown away.

  2. Too bad you said 'no sushi train' because otherwise i would recommend Makoto (on Liverpool Street, Sydney or Victoria Avenue, Chatswood), hands down.  Even though they are 'sushi train', the sushi rolls are always fresh and flavoursome.

Another sushi train type place that infinitely is better than majority of full-blown restaurant is the sushi train in No 1 Martin Place (Westin Hotel, in the basement).

Otherwise, I would probably recommend Sushi Suma (Cleveland St, Surry Hills - beware of the queue on weekends) or Kyushu (Double Bay) for the full-blown restaurants with good, authentic sushi, and then some.

  3. The place in shangri la is still there and is decent.

Try Masuya on O'Connell St - it's excellent!

  4. Some thoughts from many people..........

Bondi Junction (next to fitness first) is the best Sushi bar known in Sydney :)

Really good sushi. One of my favourite places. Mains under $20. They are always busy so the wait is usually 20-40 mins but well worth it.

I went to RISE for my birthday and it was awesome.

    Very tasty udon noodles.

There is another one in Pyrmont (right near the convention centre) that I absolutely love. They make these fried oyster thingies and have this ever so tasty creamy sauce.

Eat Me on King St does it for me. Pumkin Tempura - oh yeah.

My vote goes to Kirrakaze, main strip of Kirribilli.

They roll it for you on the spot.

the one behind the capitol theatre ( i think it's makoto... ) is the only place i've eaten in australia which took me back to what food tasted like when I was in japan.

Toko at 362 Oxford St Paddington is great. Will cost you about $20 or so p/p but good cuts and very fresh with nice presentation. Nice to go there with a date.

For value Sushi Sumo is very hard to beat on Cleveland St Surry Hills. Can be hard to get into, the place is always full of Japanese. Very generous serving, buzzing atmosphere, nice and fresh :ahoy:
