I drive a distance to work and would like to have a comfortable ride as a well as reasonable gas mileage. Don't do offroad, but live in northeast where snow can be a problem. I drive a Galant right now and want to get out of a small car. Don't have to accommodate a third seat or kids.

  1. Since we just had a half foot of snow dumped on us last night, I understand your snow problem.

The best SUV that I've drove that gets good gas mileage has been the Ford Escape.

I've been driving an '01 Escape for over a year, and with the winter we've had so far, it's been awesome. Everyone who gets in is surprised at how spacious the interior is. Even in the back seat (I'm 6'2" and I can fit in the back seat with no problem) On the older Escapes, there is a switch for AUTO or LOCK 4WD. I don't think the switch is on the new ones, but the Smart4WD works like a dream, if you even need it. But with the 4WD on, it almost feels like you're driving on pavement.

As for fuel mileage, I have a V6 in mine, and I've been getting anywhere from 19mpg to 24mpg. The I4 should get about 23mpg to 28mpg. Or, depending on if you do city or highway driving, you could look into purchasing the Escape Hybrid.

  2. i have a chevy trailblazer and love it, i originally went to buy a truck, but was sold on it when i test drove it...it handles like a car and has one touch 4 wheel drive, it does good on the gas milage and the rear seats fold all the way down as well as the doors open all the way, i bought mine used, but im sure newer ones have some newer features
