  1. There was a time in the Earth's history when there was no life in existence. Is that the environment you think should be saved. Then for millions, even billions of years it was very minimal, just single cell life forms. After that change to higher and higher live forms progressed slowly. There were periods in history when huge  amounts of life forms were buried that now are coal fields and oil reservoirs. One day man appeared on the scene as the most complex life form to date.  The continued progress in the development of life forms seems obvious.

It appears to me that any concern about destruction of the environment is way premature. The obvious way to save the environment is  a broad enough perspective to realize it is still in development. It would seem obvious that a return to a planet where no life exists is imminent, knowing the expectations for the eventual demise of the Sun. The ultimate destiny of the planet is far beyond any control of man to influence. Any effort to control change in the environment would be impossible to measure, as, what would the then existing environment be compared to.

  2. try and consume as little as possible and throw out as little as possible buy second hand using sites like ebay and chairty shops or better still freecycle, (www.freecycle.org)

grow your own veg or if you haven't the space or time buy organic locally produced food that hasn't been processed, veg box schemes rock!

    compost and recycle

and use reusable nappies when you have babies! (if you must procreate ;) )

holdiday in places you don't have to fly to (one cross atlantic flight = a whole year of commuting) and walk and cycle as much as you can.

  3. USE LESS STUFF!

...man, all these answers refer to externalities and technical programs to partially remedy the mess we are making, and which only work in the short term, provide a social-behaviour buffer to provide credibility to the argument that it seems ok to continue raping the earth at the current rate.  Sure, let's implement some of these programs - plant trees, recycle sewage, drive more efficient cars, sequester CO2, invest ethically, etc etc.  But unless we change our attitude toward the environment, and see it not as secondary to economy, but rather as a framework within which economy exists (where else do you think the souce product comes from?), we will simply be providing reason for the future generations to extract similar tolls per generation.

It really is simple in practicality, but a different occam's razor view:

Reduce (your usage of things generally)...

    .then..

Reuse (things until they don't serve a useful purpose anymore)..

    ..then..

Recycle (the things, or their components.  Note that creating waste, eg plastic bags, isn't embodied in this process step.)

...notice that recycling is the last step in this chain, listed in order of priority and effectiveness.

  4. Only eat recycled food.   poo poo pa doo

  5. global warming i dont think can be stopped but we can stop helping it becoming faster, this requires global co operation between all countries ,and taking into account human nature and the world politics ,it is unlikely that this will happen,

At least not untill we are all in the middle of planetary disastres and it becomes a battle for the survival of humanity every where.
